Ada East DCE debunked claims of rendering local salt miners homeless

The Ada East District Assembly has debunked assertions made by the local miners’ association of Songor that the assembly would render its members homeless if relocated from the Songor lagoon concession.

The local miners said they had been requested to vacate the Ada East sector of the Songor lagoon concession for Electrochem Ghana to commence mining, a directive they claim will be overturned.

This follows an official notification from salt-mining company Electrochem Ghana of its intention to begin mining in the Ada East sector of the Songor lagoon concession.

As a result, the District Assembly has requested that local miners leave that area so that the salt-mining firm can begin operations there.

However, the District Chief Executive of Ada East, Sarah Dugbakie Pobee, has debunked this claim, clarifying that residential facilities along the concession would remain unaffected.

She assured local miners that Electrochem Ghana was prepared to provide what was needed to sustain livelihoods in the region.

“Nobody is evicting them, and they are not going to relocate anybody. The houses that are there are going to remain there forever. The ponds that they are going to create will not affect any house. So the excuse they are giving is not valid, and I think Electrochem is ready to give them anything they want in exchange for what they are doing because they don’t want to take their livelihoods from them,” Madam Pobee said on Citi News.
