Gen. Joseph Henry Smith Dies

A former Army Commander, and Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. J.H. Smith has died aged 78.

The tragic passing of one of Ghana’s finest soldiers occurred in Accra in the early hours of 19 December 2023, after a brief illness.

He was appointed to the top military positions in the tenure of former President Jerry Rawlings.

He retired from the army in 2009 and was appointed as the Minister of Defence in 2009 by President John  Atta Mills, and Ghana’s ambassador to the United States in 2014 by President John Mahama.

Gen. J.H. Smith was an elder brother of politician and diplomat, Victor Smith.
