Police have arrested three suspects for assaulting a corpse and causing a disturbance at a funeral at New Abirem in the Eastern Region.

The three were arrested on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, after police were called to the burial ceremony of one Simon Agyapong alias Bagio.

The angry youths reportedly assaulted members of the bereaved family and manhandled the corpse in the casket.

After the police arrived, they were able to arrest Owusu Boateng, Kweku Benefo, and Richard Frimpong who were the main architects of the violence.

They were subsequently arraigned before a New Abirem court and were remanded into lawful custody.

This comes two weeks after a similar incident in the same community.

On Wednesday, November 8, a group of irate youth reportedly subjected the mortal remains of one Malik Abacha, a man believed to be in his late 30s, to severe lashes en route to the cemetery for his interment.

According to some youth in the town, Malik was involved in money rituals, commonly known as Sakawa, and various other crimes in the area.

They vowed to take matters into their own hands before allowing the deceased to be buried.

Initial reports indicated that the family, aware of the plot of the youth, hired bouncers and police for Malik’s burial.

However, tensions heightened, leading to a confrontation with the angry youth who obstructed the burial by setting up roadblocks.

The intervention of the Abirem District Police commander became necessary to restore order.

Despite the efforts to maintain peace, the situation took a dark turn as the youth launched a violent attack on the corpse at the cemetery during the burial proceedings.
