U.K. Cabinet Reshuffle: Home Secretary Is Fired, and David Cameron Returns to Government
Mr. Cameron, the former prime minister, will be foreign secretary. Suella Braverman, a divisive figure seen as a champion of the hard right, lost her job after attacking London’s police force.
David Cameron said he had “gladly accepted” the role of foreign secretary.
The appointment came after James Cleverly stepped into the role of home secretary.
Few British political figures are more identified with Brexit than Mr. Cameron, who called the 2016 referendum, campaigned against leaving the European Union, and then resigned as prime minister when Britons voted narrowly in favor of it.
Stella Creasy, a lawmaker from the opposition Labour Party, said that Cameron’s unelected status raised questions about his accountability in the House of Commons. “We now have a foreign secretary no MPs can question,” she wrote on X, adding that the “constitutional issue of who will have access and democratic accountability must be addressed.”
According to the Institute for Government, a British think tank, the last foreign secretary to be in the House of Lords was Lord Carrington, between 1979 and 1982.
Suella Braverman’s hard-line stance on immigration and policies toward asylum seekers had been widely criticized by rights groups. Sonya Sceats, the chief executive of Freedom from Torture, a charity that supports asylum seekers, welcomed Braverman’s firing.
Downing Street said that Thérèse Coffey has resigned as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs — the latest move in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s shuffle of his top team.
