You have set a Guinness World Record in your party’s history – PNC tells NPP

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has congratulated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the successful election of its flagbearer for the 2024 general election.

The PNC describes the decision of the NPP to elect the first non-Akan candidate to lead the party as a Guinness World Record in the party’s history.

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was elected as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general election.

He defeated Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken Assin Central MP; Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister for Agriculture; and former Asante Mampong MP, Francis Addai-Nimoh.

Dr. Bawumia polled 118,210 votes representing 61.47%, while his closest contender, Mr. Agyapong, polled 71,996 votes representing 37.41%. Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who placed a distant third, polled 1,459 votes representing 0.76%, while Addai-Nimoh garnered a meager 731 representing 0.41%.

PNC in a congratulatory message sent to the NPP on November 6, 2023, says, “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for successfully conducting internal party elections and for the election of the Vice President, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a candidate. This step sets a Guinness World Record in your party’s history”.

“While our perspectives and approaches might differ, the essence of genuine democracy prevails when every party actively engages and is afforded the chance to campaign, as exemplified in your election”.

“All candidates demonstrated maturity, and we commend the party for this. As an opposition political party, we believe in healthy competition and a policy-based case campaign that will bring a positive impact on our nation. Our party is committed to presenting alternative policies and solutions that we believe will usher the PNC into the Jubilee House come January 2025”.

“Once again, congratulations to you and your party for successfully holding a peaceful internal election. May the competition ahead be spirited yet civil, inspiring our nation with a commitment to democracy and a brighter future for our country”, the statement signed by the General Secretary of the PNC, Janet Asana Nabla noted.
