The Chairman of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Hackman Owusu-Agyemang has lamented the state of affairs of the party ahead of its November 4 presidential primary.

He bemoaned the pursuit of selfish interests of some individuals of the party which he says has divided the party in recent times.

Mr Owusu Agyemang said that the pursuit and the nature of personal interests may be overshadowing the shared goal of the party.

Giving his opening address ahead of the Council of Elders’ meeting at the Alisa Hotel at North Ridge, Accra on November 2, Mr. Owusu-Agyemang said, “We’ve allowed our selfish interest to override our common goal of party unity.”

The veteran Ghanaian politician and a former Member of Parliament for New Juaben North emphasized the need for party members to remember the bigger picture of breaking the eight.

He urged them to focus on the principles and values that have guided the NPP over the years, rather than personal ambitions.

He indicated that the race for the flagbearer position has, at times, generated passionate debates and disagreements within the party and among supporters of the presidential candidates but he called on all the presidential aspirants to eschew divisiveness and stay united after Saturday’s presidential primary.

The NPP will on Saturday, November 4, select a flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 elections. The race has generated considerable excitement, with four prominent party members vying for the position.

The delegates will be voting on four aspirants, namely the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, former Agric Minister, Dr. Akoto Afriyie, and a former MP of Asante Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimo.

The delegates, who make up the Electoral College comprise Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, Ministers and their deputies, Foundation members of the NPP, members of the party’s National Council, and Patrons and Council of Elders.

The rest are regional party officers, constituency officers, constituency patrons, constituency elders, electoral area coordinators, polling station executives, overseas branches, and members of Tescon, the tertiary students’ wing of the party.
