Louie Rankin has been killed in a car crash in Canada, TMZ reports

Rankin died in the fatal wreck on Monday in Ontario, which reportedly included a transport truck and another vehicle.

Ontario authorities said that Rankin’s car somehow hit a transport truck on a highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, having died instantly in the collision. The truck driver didn’t endure any physical injuries. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Rankin, a Grammy award-winning artist, became famous for his role as the Jamaican kingpin Ox, in the Nas and DMX-starring 1998 crime drama Belly.

Nas and Louie became close during the making of Belly, and reunited to shoot the music video for DJ Khaled’s song “Nas Album Done” in 2016. Rankin also appeared in the 2002 film Shottas, and 2014’s We Run These Streets.

Born and raised in Jamaica, Rankin was a dancehall and reggae musician, and released the hit 1992 single “Typewriter,” which won him a Grammy. He often designated himself in his lyrics as the “Original Don Dada.”

Many people in the rap world and beyond paid tribute to the late artist and actor.
