Voter Registration: Attack At Okaikwei North Leaves 15 Injured

Fifteen persons were injured after they were attacked by masked men while waiting in a queue to be registered in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise at Okaikwei North. 

According to the victims, the assailants took their mobile phones and over GH₵11,000 during the Sunday attack.

“Our phones, our money have been stolen. I had 150 dollars in my phone case, which was also stolen. My colleagues also suffered the same fate,” one of the victims recounted.

Another victim, Gifty Dogbe, who could not stand, told journalists that her legs gave up after one of the attackers hit her with a stick.

Information gathered indicates that there were no security personnel at the centre at the time of the incident.

Gregory Quarshie, the chairman of the Okaikwei  North National Democratic Congress (NDC), who was present, said that the incident has since been reported to the police.

He said the Achimota police had taken over the case for investigations.

“I drove some of them(victims) to the Achimota Police Station, and they were interrogated by the CID. Some have also been given medical forms,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Quarshie disclosed that the injured persons were undergoing treatment at the 37 Military Hospital and Achimota Hospital.
