A five-year-old girl has died in rainwater at Moshie Zongo in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.
The little girl reportedly tried to cross a dilapidated bridge while returning from school but got swept away by running water after an hour of rain on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
According to the Assembly Member for the Moshie Zongo Electoral area, Emmanuel Nti Kyei, even though the victim was from a different area, they have contacted her family.
“After the rainfall, a certain guy called me and said they had found a dead body along the river bank, so I quickly told them to identify the fellow because I was a bit far. It was later they informed me that he was a school pupil from one of the institutions and the school they mentioned was one of the private institutions.
“The school they mentioned was not in our area, so l called the Tafo presiding member and asked if he knew a school by the name Utopia International School, which was the only identification. Someone gave me directions to the school and was told they had informed the police. I was told the police had taken the body to the morgue,” Mr Nti Kyei said.
Cases of rainwater carrying children away are increasing in Ghana.
She was travelling in a tricycle which got carried away after heavy rains in the area.
In the same month, an 11-year-old girl was carried away by flashwaters after rainfall at Anwomaso in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The class four pupil, according to residents, was taken away by the running water after she slipped on a bridge and fell into the river beneath while playing in the rain.
A six-year-old boy also met his untimely death in the same manner at Tafo Ahenbronum in the Ashanti Region in June 2023.
According to residents, he slipped and fell into an open gutter while playing in the rain.
