Leaked IGP Tape: Supt. Asare told Bugri Naabu I’d be a better IGP – COP Mensah
One of the security chiefs implicated in the alleged ‘IGP leaked tape’, COP George Alex Mensah, has revealed that Superintendent George Asare lobbied for him to be appointed as the new IGP to replace Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
COP Mensah said the former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bugri Naabu, informed Superintendent Asare that the Akufo-Addo government was considering a change in leadership of the Police Service due to concerns about the current IGP’s modus operandi.
According to him, Superintendent Asare then recommended him as a suitable replacement for Dr Dampare, adding that based on that recommendation, Bugri Naabu invited him to his office for a discussion.
“Bugri Naabu told Asare that the IGP is likely to be changed and they are looking for a replacement, so Supt. Asare told him that there is a boy who can do the job well.
“And Bugri Naabu said ‘Oh is that so, then bring him and let me see him’, That was why I ended up at Bugri Naabu’s office.”
The lawyer cum Chartered Accountant said he has been lobbying to be made the Inspector General of Police (IGP) since 2017.
He insisted that even though he has not been successful at that, he has not given up on that desire.
The Police chief also confirmed to the committee that he’s a sympathiser of the NPP.
