The former Director General of Operations of the Ghana Police Service COP Alex Mensah, has stated that the Inspector General Of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is mismanaging the Ghana Police Service.
“Honourable chair, I will not deny that fact today, tomorrow or the next day. I will make that statement again that the current IGP is not managing the police service well. It is something I will not run away from. I will say it anywhere, everywhere that I go,” he said.
COP Mensah added that a tape said to have captured him in a conversation with some persons, including former Northern Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Bugri Naabu, was doctored.
He said the tape he heard played to him on the public address (PA) system during the hearing by the seven-member special committee was different from the conversation they had.
“Hon. Chair, what I am saying is that the tape that I heard today, there are so many things in that tape that I don’t remember, and there are certain things that I remember we discussed that are not on the tape,” he told the committee on Thursday, August 31, when he appeared before the Atta Akyea Committee.
His witness was contrary to a confession by Chief Bugri Naabu.
The committee has been tasked by the Speaker of Parliament to, among others, investigate the authenticity of the leaked audio recording, which is said to have captured the top officers conspiring to remove the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
The committee will recommend sanctions against persons who will be found culpable after its hearing.
Meanwhile, the government has assured that IGP Akuffo Dampare will not be removed, as the leaked audio recording suggested.
