Minority Notifies Police Of September 5 Demo Against BOG Governor

The Minority in Parliament has notified the police of its planned protest, scheduled for Tuesday, September 5.

This comes after calls for the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison and his two deputies to resign over alleged mismanagement.

In a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command and dated Monday, August 21, the Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, outlined the caucus’s concerns and reasons for the upcoming demonstration.

The demonstration will be conducted within the framework of sections 1, 2, and 3 of the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491).

Per the letter, the primary focus of the protest is the central bank’s alleged printing of over GH¢80 billion for the Akufo-Addo government, which the Minority claims was illegal.

They highlighted that this action has contributed to a hyperinflation rate of 54.1% in December 2022, leading to severe economic challenges for Ghanaians.

Furthermore, the caucus indicated that the central bank’s actions have resulted in approximately 850,000 Ghanaians being pushed into poverty.

According to the Minority, these actions led to significant losses for the institution, including a loss of GH¢60.8 billion and negative equity of GH¢5.1 billion in 2022.
