Garlic, nature’s medicine, the wonder drug

It is reported that garlic releases a sulfur-bearing compound called allicin when eaten. Allicin is the chemical that gives garlic its pungent smell and taste. It has therapeutic ingredients that are useful in killing bacteria and fungi.

In the circles of herbalists, it is thought to suppress the growth of cancer cells and promote a healthy cardiovascular system.

Research has proven the use of garlic as a remedy for indigestion and diarrhea, to destroy micro-organisms for bacteria, fungi, and viral infections, and to expel intestinal worms and parasites.

Allicin gets the credit for the antibiotic properties of garlic. It is reported that one milligram of allicin is equal to the antibiotic activity of 15I.U of penicillin. It worked against strains that were resistant to antibiotics.

Garlic in one study conducted in India proved inhibitory against certain food pathogens.

Described as a ”wonder drug” with the reputation for preventing everything from the common cold and flu to the plague, garlic has been used by some to treat the symptoms of acne and there is some evidence it can be used in managing high cholesterol levels. It can be effective as a natural mosquito repellent.

The human body does not appear to build up resistance to garlic, so its positive health benefits continue over time.
