Kwame Yedu Writes: Kwabena Agyei Agyapong Is The Best NPP Flagbearer Hopeful
NPP Presidential candidate, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong churned out a rare package of campaign ideas wrapped in fluency of speech and confidence in demeanor when he formally addressed the media to announce his candidacy.
In the audience was the respected Kwame Pianim, the economist with a high stature who speaks his mind despite his obvious political leanings.
Kwabena Agyei Agyapong asked NPP delegates going to choose a flagbearer for the party not to be carried away by the large ambiance surrounding sloganeers, but pay attention to the ideas that will benefit the entire citizenry and could become the cornerstone for NPP’s victory in the next General Elections.
Things that are unsaid, usually swept under the carpet were fingered by this resolute candidate. He spoke about over-invoicing of project costs as leaks on national kitty, thus depriving the state of funds needed to upgrade and improve the system. He also mentioned gentrification, the process of replacing old physical structures with modern ones for all communities that are trapped in poor conditions.
The Civil Engineer he is, he was particular about the creation of recreational parks that provides the requisite social environment for people. This was the superstructure to another vital point he had made in which he took a swipe at the sale of every public space for housing at the expense of other items necessary for the public good.
Mr Agyapong who was a former sports commentator and was loved by Ghanaians for his quality at it, predictably touched on sports. He said it is an avenue for the youth not only to excel for recognition in the prime of their lives but also a space for mass participation that will allow financial turnaround and well-being in terms of health. It is indubitable that this candidate is fully immersed in sports and his pinpointed interest in the sector revolves around the resuscitation of flagging fortunes, especially in soccer and boxing.
A questioner who drew his attention to polls that gives him no chance in the NPP race got an excellent answer which latched onto precedents where so-called underdogs in heated political races had surprised the field with spectacular wins. Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong called on the delegates to attend the primaries with utmost care and choose the candidate that represents the change Ghanaians want in terms of being decisive and creating innovations as alternatives to the conventional approach that yields nothing in the end.
To this end, he called on the delegates to vote for him. He said Ghana needs a leader who knows how to identify and apply talents to the task of nation-building. This mantra looks like one that sees beyond middlemen often cited as stumbling blocks to other citizens who need just the recognition and encouragement of national leaders to excel and bring something to the table. He said the party must avoid handing the flagbearer baton to one who may put the party on the path to an implosion in the national polls despite the partisan excitement the choice may bring.
”Vote for principles, values, and Character”, and ”Choose leadership that understands, loves, and helps the people”, are thought-provoking quotes from Candidate Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
