Two brothers have reportedly drowned in an abandoned quarry pit in the Anoff community in the Eastern Region.

The victims have been identified as Okyere Kwame, 27, and Kwarfo, 24.

According to reports, the brothers had gone to the abandoned quarry site of Mendor Quarry Company to wash themselves by swimming in stagnant water after a hunting expedition.

Unfortunately, they lost their lives in the process.

A younger brother, who saw them, rushed to their house to raise the alarm.

A rescue team comprising personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and residents quickly responded.

However, their efforts could not save the victims, as their lifeless bodies were retrieved from the water.

The bodies have since been transported to the morgue at the Nsawam Government Hospital for further examination.

The Operations Director for NADMO in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality, Peter Kojo Appiah, explained that the quarry site had been inactive for some time, resulting in a large hole.

“These guys went hunting, and on their way home, they decided to wash down. As they were bathing in the water, they started drowning. The younger brother rushed home to inform the family about the tragedy. We went there to retrieve the bodies, which have been deposited at the morgue,” he narrated.

Meanwhile, NADMO has summoned the owner of the quarry to address the safety concerns surrounding the abandoned location.
