MOFA, WFP, USAID support 17 districts in the north of Ghana
Ghana’s Ministry of Agriculture, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are severally sponsoring Smallholder Farmers (SHFs) in 17 districts of the country’s north with 7 million dollars over a 3-month period. 77,000 farmers are listed to benefit from the package meant to shore up recipients during lean seasons.
Other collaborators of this farming activity support are Mobile Telephony Network (MTN), and the National Identification Authority (NIA), for their respective roles in facilitating cash transfers to the farmers.
Funding is provided by the USAID, and it points towards the context or situational report presented by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Ghana which has been working towards improving the lot of peasant farmers through intensified state assistance and international partnerships.
The overall goal of the activity is to keep the poor farmers in business, not only for subsistence but commerce. Climate change is cited as a major reason causing fluctuations in agricultural productivity in the country. WFP’s ambit seeks to generate high productivity in the agricultural chain to ensure food security. That sustained, Ghana has had to work on food inflation that negates bumper harvests.
