All is set for the highly anticipated Assin North by-election, which is scheduled to take place today, Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
In all, 41,168 voters, across the 99 polling stations, will gather at the Assin North constituency to vote for their preferred candidates.
It will be recalled that the constituency has garnered significant attention due to the unique circumstances surrounding the vacant parliamentary seat.
The by-election was necessitated by the legal challenges surrounding the eligibility of the deposed Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson.
Following allegations of false declaration of office and perjury, a court ruling deemed Mr. Quayson’s election invalid, leading to the vacant seat and the subsequent need for a by-election.
Various political parties have been actively campaigning to secure the seat for their respective candidates.
The governing, New Patriotic Party, has the 40-year-old electrical Engineer, Charles Opoku as their candidate while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has maintained James Quayson as their candidate.
Aside from these two big stalwarts, the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has a candidate in the person of Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, offering voters a diverse range of choices.
The campaign period has been marked by energetic rallies, door-to-door visits, and vibrant debates, all aimed at wooing the electorate and securing their support.
In preparation for the by-election, election officials have been diligently working to ensure a smooth and transparent process.
Measures have been put in place to guarantee the integrity of the electoral system, including the deployment of adequate security personnel to maintain law and order throughout the voting process.
Already, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare has met with executives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of Today’s by-election.
The meeting held on Monday, June 26, was aimed at fostering communication and collaboration between the police force and the political parties to ensure a peaceful and orderly election.
The IGP assured that the police force would uphold the law and defend everyone’s rights throughout the by-election.
