Tension in Ghana’s judiciary defused
Reports say, the Judicial Service Association of Ghana JUSAG, called off its strike action in the afternoon of Monday 29 May 2023.
The staff of the judicial service abandoned the courts last week and announced an indefinite strike until their demands were met by the government.
The move frustrated legal clients. The issue came up during Parliament’s vetting of the new Chief Justice.
The nominee, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo gave her commitment to see to the peaceful resolution of the crisis.
Being the third arm of government, vested with powers for the adjudication of disputes and interpretation of the constitution, the judiciary has been pivotal to the peaceful evolution of Ghana’s democracy underpinned by the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The recent imbroglio was occasioned by unmet conditions of service which the Staff of the Judicial Service said, the executive had dragged its feet on the urgent issue.
