3 persons remanded for allegedly assaulting man on suspicion of being gay
The Asokore Mampong Court has remanded three suspects in police custody for allegedly assaulting, robbing, and demanding a ransom from a 22-year-old man they accused of being gay.
Despite the fact that there was no conversation about ‘gay,’ the victim was viciously attacked by the five males.
The three who are under arrest were reported to be part of a group of five who allegedly abused, robbed, sprayed a substance into the victim’s eyes, and demanded a ransom from his family because they claimed he was gay.
The 22-year-old victim was assaulted and left with glass louver blade wounds on Saturday at Kentikrono, in Kumasi after one of the accused invited him.
On Sunday, the crime was reported to police, and three of the suspects were apprehended and processed for court.
The case is adjourned until May 18, 2023, on several accusations.
Meanwhile, LGBTQ has become a hot topic in Ghana after the visit of US Vice President, Kamala Harris, sparking a wide range of arguments, especially in Ghana’s Parliament.
During a joint press conference with President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra, US Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of the LGBTQ community.
President Akufo-Addo on the other hand revealed that his government had taken steps to modify the current anti-LGBTQ Bill.
Speaking on the issue, the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Mr. Alban Bagbin described the American Vice President’s comments as undemocratic, explaining that the US Vice President cannot dictate to Ghanaians what is good and bad, adding that the Bill would be passed.
The Speaker also took a swipe against President Akufo-Addo for what he called the lack of boldness in telling the US Vice President about Ghana’s position on LGBTQ.
