Akufo-Addo Demands Retraction And Apology From Al Jazeera Over Gold Mafia Documentary

Source The Ghana Report

President Nana Akufo-Addo has officially written to the Al Jazeera Media Network, demanding a retraction and apology over its depiction of the president in its documentary, “Gold Mafia”.

“It is imperative that you act forthwith on this request within seven (7) days from the date of receipt of this letter,” the president said in a letter signed by his Secretary, Nana Bediatuo Asante.

According to the Secretary to the President, the inaccurate and unfair documentary contained spurious and unsubstantiated allegations against the president and the government of Ghana.

Allegations that the government has maintained are false.

The said documentary investigated Zimbabwe’s gold smuggling and money laundering syndicates, and in the concluding episode, undercover journalists posing as Chinese gangsters interacted with Alistair Mathias, a financial architect who helped to clean their dirty money.

Mathias named Ghana as one of the countries where he had executed similar schemes and claimed that the president used to be his lawyer and was a good friend of his.

The Jubilee House has since described parts of the documentary as malicious, defamatory, and a calculated attempt to tarnish the reputation of the president and the government of Ghana.

The Presidency demanded that Al Jazeera provides further and better particulars on the period for which the president allegedly provided legal representation to Mr Mathias or his company, Guldrest Resources.

However, Al Jazeera has refused or failed to provide information regarding the allegations.

Below is the statement to that effect
