A yet-to-be-identified woman has been arrested for dumping her 2-day-old baby into an uncompleted latrine at Fahiakobo in the Bibiani Anhweaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.
According to the Abakomahene of Fahiakobo, Nana Akwasi Addae, some residents, on Monday, April 24, 2023, woke up to the loud cry of a baby coming from the direction of the latrine.
They followed the sound and discovered the baby girl, who was immediately rescued from the pit.
The residents rushed the baby to the Bibiani Government Hospital for treatment, but she was pronounced dead later in the day.
Nana Addae added that the case was reported to the police, who started investigations immediately.
The mother was found and is currently in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
This comes a few weeks after another woman was arrested for dumping her newborn baby into a toilet pit at Senchi in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.
The mother of three reportedly dumped the newborn in her household KVIP facility on Thursday, March 16, 2023.
A resident who found the baby on time raised an alarm when they heard the baby crying in the toilet.
Other residents swiftly responded and demolished the concrete slabs on the facility to save the baby’s life.
The mother was later granted bail to breastfeed the baby.
