A group of angry youth has attacked a police station over the arrest of a motorized tricycle (Pragya) rider at Sefwi Bekwai in the Western North Region.

The rider, Kwabena Gyapong, 20, was arrested after he reportedly resisted a search by the police while on his way to Sefwi Sorano.

He allegedly engaged in a scuffle with one officer but was overpowered by the patrol team and detained.

Upon hearing the news, the youth, mostly Pragya riders, besieged the police station with stones and clubs, demanding the release of their colleague.

They damaged a service vehicle in the process.

It took the intervention of a reinforcement team to bring the situation under control amid sporadic warning shots.

Two of the youth sustained various degrees of injury, while four were arrested.

Meanwhile, the Sefwi Bekwai District Police Command has said that the injuries suffered by the victims were not from gunshots.

In a related development, Nana Gyebi, father of the Pragya rider, claims that his son was seriously injured before he was detained in the cells, but the police refused to seek medical attention for him.

The police is yet to comment on the incident officially.
