A 54-year-old electrician has been arrested at Kunsu, in the Ahafo Ano South District of the Ashanti Region, for installing illegal meters.

The suspect, John Fofie, was picked up at his hideout by the revenue collection task force of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He is said to have installed fake electricity meters embossed with the ECG logo.

A search led to the discovery of eight fake meters at his residence.

Ashanti Regional Protection Manager Kofi Danso, who led the team during the exercise, said the suspect is currently at the Abuakwa Police Station.

According to Mr. Danso, 50 customers were found to be using illegal meters.

He assured the task force would leave no stone unturned in dealing with unscrupulous persons who installed the illegal meters.

It will be recalled that on Monday, March 20, ECG announced a massive disconnection exercise to mobilize revenue.

The nationwide revenue mobilization exercise focuses on all categories of customers in arrears, including State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

The companies will be monitored by special teams who will apprehend and prosecute customers who attempt to interfere with the exercise and/or undertake illegal self-reconnection after disconnection.

The overall target is to recover all unpaid bills amounting to GH¢5.7 billion.
