Ayipey brothers: The most dominant siblings in Ghana football.
Ayipey is the surname of siblings with one of the highest appearances in Ghanaian football.
Samuel Ayipey played as a right winger for Sekondi Hasaacas in the top-flight league in 1983/84. Samuel was a regular in the club’s first eleven that was almost invincible and was capable of beating Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak on any day. The Hasaacas line-up included Annor Walker, now a coach for Samartex. At the end of the 1984 season, Samuel Ayipey was poached by Asante Kotoko and was a member of the team that defeated Egypt’s Zamalek 5-1 in 1987 at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.
Isaac Ayipey was a member of the Sekondi Eleven Wise team when it was popular with the ”Akaraka chi cha choo” slogan. In the 1984/85 seasons, he was a leading goal poacher for the club though it was David Bolfrey also of the club who won the goal king in 1985. He joined Accra Hearts of Oak at the start of the 1986 season, unfortunately, due to abysmal performance by the phobians he was listed in the mass transfers undertaken by the club at the end of that season. Isaac Ayipey was a powerful goal scorer as a center-forward for clubs he played for.
Alex Ayipey too played for Accra Hearts of Oak after a stint with Sekondi Eleven Wise. He was a forward player for both clubs in the 1990s. He was not particularly vintage as an individual but very useful in the collective attack on opponents. He was a viable attacking option for Hearts especially when he joined the team at a time it badly required scorers.
Philip Ayipey completes the list of Ayipey brothers who played for clubs in the Ghana Premier Football League. Like his brothers, Philip was impressive at Eleven Wise and Accra Hearts of Oak as a center-forward and occasionally registered his name on the scoresheets.
