Be discerning; stop voting for politicians on the basis of promises – Zanetor Rawlings
Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey-Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings says the youth should be wary of campaign promises that seek to give the impression that government will provide all their needs once voted into power.
Contextualizing her comments with respect to the provision of jobs, the legislator said it was impossible for the central government to provide jobs for each and every teeming unemployed youth in the country hence candidates who profess the ability to create jobs for the youth when voted into power should be ignored.
Addressing patrons at the 2019 International Youth Empowerment Summit (IYES) on Thursday at the National Theatre, Zanetor Rawlings stressed the need for a broader consultation among stakeholders for a more strategic and sustainable plan to create the needed employment opportunities for the many youth in need of jobs.
She noted “There has to be an alliance between the three entities; government, civil society and the private sector.”
She further reiterated “The youth must be discerning; government alone cannot provide jobs for the entire country. We cannot have one entity promising to give you a job, that will not be possible”.
The MP is urging leaders to take responsibility for their actions and provide an enabling environment for the youth to prosper.
She added that leaders must build an educational system which offers more students a path to a prosperous and an enlightened life.
