The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has criticized some communities in the Ashanti Region that are engaged in what it described as “water theft”.
According to the Chief Water Manager for Ashanti North, Francis Mensah, the worst culprits are Aboabo and Moshe Zongo communities.
He disclosed this after a visit to the Moshie Zongo to engage the community members on the worrying development.
Mr. Mensah said the water meters that are being stolen are very expensive, thus affecting their operations negatively.
“We have been experiencing water thefts and the worse is Moshe Zongo, Aboabo, and other areas. Our men on the field report not less than 10-meter thefts which meters are very expensive. We then installed smart meters but still, people steal them,” he said.
He, therefore, urged the leadership of these communities to assign their watchdog committees to help curb the issue.
Mr. Mensah further revealed that the Ghana Water Company Limited has begun processing clients who owe the company huge water bills for the court where they would be made to pay the debts with interest.
He added that GWCL has intensified efforts to ensure legal action is taken against any person caught engaging in illegal water connection.
