One person has reportedly died after some residents of Wassa Benso attacked the Golden Star Resources mining company in the Western Region.

Four others have also sustained various degrees of injuries following the violent confrontation.

The residents who besieged the mines reportedly chased the workers with machetes and other tools out of the premises.

They also set the mine ablaze after the workers bolted for their lives.

According to the Assembly Member for Benso Electoral Area, properties worth millions of Ghana Cedis were destroyed in the blaze.

Meanwhile, the police have assured that they have restored calm and order at the mining site following the disturbances.

In a statement, they said they have reached out to some opinion leaders in the community and the management of Golden Star mines to find an amicable and lasting settlement.

“We would like to urge all parties to remain calm as the police investigate the incident and bring any persons found culpable to face justice,” the statement said.
