Committee set up to investigate Assin Fosu Police

The Central Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP), Paul Awuni, has set up a committee to investigate the allegations of corruption and unprofessionalism levelled against the Assin Fosu police.

The five-member committee, headed by the Central Regional Crime Officer, Chief Supt. Rueben Asiwoko, was inaugurated last Thursday and it has two weeks to submit its report.

Other members of the committee are Sergeant Mawuli Nyamasedorm of the Mankessim Divisional CID, Detective Chief Inspector William Addy of the Station CID Office at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), DSP Robert Awampaga, the Mankessim Divisional Crime Officer and DSP Kenneth Kuntogli, Cape Coast Metro Crime Officer.

The allegations

On July 25, 2019, a group issued a statement accusing the Assin Fosu Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Daniel Dartey of using his office to assist fraudsters within the Assin Fosu Municipality to perpetuate crime.

The group backed the allegations of extortion with a video recording that went viral on social media.

The police were also accused of setting free an alleged fraudster after taking GH¢880 out of GH¢ 2000 they demanded from him.

Besides the allegations levelled against the Assin Fosu police by the group, the NPP Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Mr Kennedy Agyapong, has also accused the police in the area of corruption.

In a video that went viral, the legislator threatened to send video evidence of extortion by the police to the Inspector General of Police.

The committee has been given two weeks beginning August 15 , 2019 to submit its report to the Regional Police Commander for the necessary actions to be taken.

Sanctions

COP Awuni said any police officer found culpable will be dealt with to serve as deterrent to others.

He assured the public of the continued efforts by the police to protect lives and property and to maintain law and order in the division.
