An armed robber has been shot dead after a gun battle between his group and the police at Tebeso No II in the Ashanti Region.

According to the Assembly Member for the Tebeso Electoral Area, Amoako Mensah Yeboah, three men hired a taxi driver from Adansi Asokwa Junction to Bodwensango.

Upon reaching the town, they told the driver to continue the journey to the next town.

They allegedly forced him out of the car at gunpoint in the middle of the journey and sped off with the taxi.

“The driver, lucky to have his phone on him, called to inform his colleague drivers of what had happened. After calling them, they also informed the police, who took a swift intervention to block the robbers on the road,” Mr Yeboah narrated.

He said upon seeing the police barrier; the robbers decided to return. In the process, they started exchanging gunshots with the police.

“One of the robbers driving the cab was shot and died on the spot. The remaining two got out of the car and started running, but the police were able to arrest one of them (a 60-year-old man) whilst the last person was able to run away.”

He added that further investigations by the police revealed that the third suspect was an ex-convict named Agyekum, who was recently released from prison.

Agyekum is currently on the run and is the subject of a manhunt by the Fomena Police Command.

Meanwhile, the dead body of the deceased robber has been deposited at the Fomena Hospital morgue.
