AMVCA organisers call for 2023 entries

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is back for its ninth season, and the organisers, MultiChoice Nigeria and Africa Magic has said they will be taking things a notch higher.

The eighth edition of the awards, which was held for eight days in May 2022, was indeed a spectacle for all those who attended or watched the events on TV.

In a statement sent to The PUNCH, the organisers called on African filmmakers to submit their movies and films publicly exhibited or broadcast between December 1, 2021, and January 31, 2023, for this year’s edition of the awards.

The entry portal opens on February 20, 2023, and will close on March 10, 2023. All films (aired in cinemas or otherwise), made-for-television movies or television series are eligible so long as they fall within the specified timeline.

To enter the awards, filmmakers must prepare a five-minute-long showreel. The video must be less than 300MB and submitted on the Africa Magic website.

Speaking on the forthcoming edition of the awards ceremony, the Head of Content and West Africa Channels, MultiChoice, Busola Tejumola, said, “The AMVCAs returned last year after a one-year break with much pomp and circumstance. We had an eight-day celebration filled with several activities affecting the different facets of our industry. Since then, we have seen more brilliant work we look forward to celebrating at the ninth edition of the awards. This year’s AMVCAs will once again demonstrate our intentionality in spotlighting the tremendous talent we have in the African film and TV industry.”

The ‘Best Social Online Content Creator’ category which was introduced last year makes a return for this edition as well. Recall that popular comedian, Sabinus, aka Mr Funny, was the pioneer winner of the award. The award recognises the growing acceptance of content creators across Africa. There are also categories such as the ‘trailblazer’ and ‘lifetime achievement’ awards that are often emotional wins.

The popular ‘Best-dressed’ for male and female categories is another highlight that many will be looking out for. For an event that attracts several celebs dressed to kill, it is usually a Herculean task to select the winner of this particular category. The duo of Osas Ighodaro and Denola Grey took home the awards last year.
