Arise Ghana Joins Pensioner Bondholders To Picket At Finance Ministry

Picketing at the Finance Ministry which started on Monday, February 6, appears to have attracted different personalities from all walks of life. Members of Pressure Group, Arise Ghana joined the pensioners on Wednesday, February 15.  

The Executive Director of the Alliance For Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson, FixTheCountry Convenor Oliver Barker Vormawor, Rex Omar and many others were present to solidarize with the retired citizens.

According to the Executive Director of ASEPA, it is unfair to rob senior citizens of their hard-earned monies, especially at a time when the aged ought to be protected.

“It’s because we feel that this government is becoming extremely insensitive to the plight of our senior citizens. There is a saying that a nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for. These are our heroes, people who have served this country in various capacities, so why tow this path?

“And the government thinks this is the only way they can revive this economy? To take monies from these vulnerable people, especially in a country where we don’t have any social protection plan for the aged as we do in other jurisdictions. They have cards that they can take buses for free, and hospitals for free…we don’t have them here,” he lamented.

Adding his voice, the social media firebrand and lawyer, Mr. Vormawor, emphasized the need to support ”senior citizens who find themselves in serious government repression.”

Meanwhile, the pensioners will be meeting the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin later today on their campaign regarding a possible exemption from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
