Valentines Day: Spike in the sale of condoms
Yesterday, 14th February 2023, there was a spike in the purchasing of condoms and sex enhancement products in most parts of Accra.
Valentine’s day is observed in most parts of the world as a day of love but in Ghana and most parts of the world people especially the youth take advantage of the day to engage themselves in sex and other sexually related activities.
According to information from most pharmacies and shops that sell condoms in Accra, yesterday saw an increase in the purchase of condoms and other sexual lubricants compared to a “regular weekday”.
According to a Pharmacist from Ricco Pharmaceuticals,” the purchase of condoms and sexual lubricants have gone up today and I believe it’s because of Valentine’s day celebration, on the regular condoms sold on weekdays are at the minimal compared to the purchase on Friday nights and the weekends but today’s (Val’s day) sales from condoms and lubricants are highest you could ever get on a weekday”
She added that this year the consumers ( people who purchased these condoms and lubricants) are more of the youth.
“The youth are the ones buying the condoms and the other sexual items, I think the people who are advanced in age have outgrown the fuss that comes with valentine’s day, and the youth are just being adventurous and I appreciate the fact that they try all these adventures protected”, she said.
Also in a conversation with a sexual enhancement products seller who also deals in the sale of sex toys, she disclosed that as compared to previous years, the sale of her products before and during the valentines day celebration was not the best but for a weekday sale, it was the highest sale.
” This year, I was expecting people to patronize my products, especially towards this valentines day celebration but my expectations didn’t materialize. On the flip side, I made my best weekday sales today ( 14th February), and I delivered two sex dolls to two of my very good customers. For the sex enhancement products it’s left with only two out of the lot I had for today and I have sold over 50 dildos today alone”, she explained.
She added on previous Valentine’s days she could sell more than she sold yesterday but she thinks the state of the economy affected her sales.
Also speaking to some youngsters, they explained that it is the day they show love and care to their significant friends.
Roy, a 20-year-old man, explained that most times ladies on these special days expect gifts from their partners but in most situations do not see the need to return the gesture, as a result, they offer sex as a gift instead of getting the other partner a tangible gift and it will take an assertive man to say no to such an offer on Valentine’s day.
Going down memory lane, on the 14th of February 2018, it was reported that some parts of Accra experienced shortages of condoms in pharmacies and cosmetic shops.
