A police vehicle transporting suspects from Damango in the Savannah Region to Tamale was on Monday night involved in an accident on the Fufulso-Damango highway.
Eight suspects and seven police officers were on board the vehicle with registration number GP516 when the unfortunate accident occurred.
The injured suspects who were rushed to the hospital for medical care, have been returned to the cells, at the Busunu Police Station.
Monday’s accident also caused the death of an unidentified middle-aged man believed to be a herdsman.
The deceased was reportedly crossing from the western part of the road onto the main road when the vehicle ran over him; killing him instantly.
The suspects being transported were part of a youth group who besieged the Damongo police station after their counterparts from Buipe were brought to the Damongo police station for allegedly attacking a Fulani settlement in Buipe.
Earlier, some youth in the Buipe embarked on a demonstration to register their displeasure over an alleged Enskinment of a Fulani Mande chief by the Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II.
The angry youth were of the view that the Gonjaland Council led by the Yagbonwura was not aware of the enskinment of the Mande chief by the Buipewura and indicated that they would resist any attempt to enskin the Fulani as Mande chief.
The incident resulted in a clash between the youth and police which led the police to fire warning shots injuring some persons in the process, and the subsequent arrest of the suspects.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Saint Anne’s Hospital mortuary for further investigations.
