The Inspector General of Police(IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has directed the police administration to relocate police officers stationed at the Apromase Barracks in the Ashanti Region following a fire outbreak.
The inferno consumed the apartment complex and displaced police and their families, leaving them traumatised.
The fire that occurred on the night of Sunday, January 15, claimed the life of a policeman, his wife and their 4-month-old baby.
While addressing the victims at the scene, the IGP said they would carry out a comprehensive structural and technical assessment of the apartment as part of the investigation.
“I have instructed that all the other blocks not affected, we are going to evacuate all of you and give you a decent place nearby, especially now that schools have reopened the kids will not be disadvantaged. We will leave this structure for a complete assessment by structural and electrical engineers and all other experts who can have a very comprehensive examination of the structures for us to know what need to be done to improve safety within the flats for you to be able to come back”.
He added that the police administration is also deploying clinical psychologists to provide psycho-social support to the victim.
Dr Dampare was accompanied by some senior officers of the police administration to commiserate with the victims and assured them that the police would cater to their needs.
Sergeant Owusu Asante Baafi with the Anti-Robbery Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command and his wife Yaa Achiaa died together with their baby after they got trapped in the fire.
Their bodies have since been deposited at the morgue.
Meanwhile, the police and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have launched a joint investigation into the incident.
