Some Chinese nationals have unleashed wild dogs to attack officials of the Tax Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) at a quarry site at Kasoa.
The incident occurred on Thursday, December 8, 2022, when the officials went to enforce tax compliance at the site.
According to the Head of Enforcement at the GRA, in charge of Accra Central, Joseph Annan, the dogs were released immediately after they arrived at the site.
“We experienced some nasty encounter today. Dogs were released on us, but thanks to our security officers in the name of the preventive staff,” he said.
He explained that the team was able to control the aggressive dogs because members had been specially trained to handle hostile situations.
“They were able to quell the situation. There are a lot of Chinese nationals operating here without paying VAT, and when we come to enforce the law, they open their dogs. We will deal with them for trying to push us back,” he assured.
He added that the persons behind this act would be investigated and prosecuted.
“The case will be investigated, and then the docket will be completed and handed over to our legal unit for possible prosecution”, he stressed.
The tax compliance enforcement exercise is part of measures by the GRA to improve revenue collection in the country.
Officials had earlier embarked on similar exercises at quarry sites in the Shai-Osudoku District, where they shut down some companies for not paying taxes.
Mr Annan indicated that the team would also concentrate on operators in the tourism and hospitality industry this festive season to ensure that they comply with tax laws.
