A 25-year-old nursing mother has been confirmed dead after a stray bullet allegedly hit her at Manso Datano in the Ashanti Region.
The unfortunate incident, which occurred on Saturday morning (November 19, 2022) during a funeral, has left residents and family members completely shattered.
The deceased and her child were shot when soldiers allegedly attacked residents who were observing the interment of a colleague who had died in an illegal mining pit three months ago.
She was rushed to the Saint Michael’s hospital at Agroyesom but was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where she died the following day (November 20).
Her child, however, survived gunshot wounds and is responding to treatment.
It is unclear what may have triggered this incident, but footage of military officers firing indiscriminately has surfaced online.
According to the assembly member for the area, Kwame Amponsah, a military officer, who is yet to be identified, ran after the mourners and physically assaulted an onlooker.
The said officer fired shots into the air to disperse the residents, but an accidental shot into the ground deflected and hit the nursing mother and her baby.
The deceased was an operator of a pub in the community established by her husband.
