Sammy Gyamfi apologises to Samira Bawumia over ‘V8 full of makeup’ comment

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has apologised to Ghana’s Second Lady Mrs Samira Bawumia for alleging that there is an SUV dedicated to a makeup artist in her convoy.

This follows an interview Mr Gyamfi granted on Neat FM in Accra on November 7, 2022.

He had claimed Mrs Bawumia had a Toyota V8 Land Cruiser that transports her makeup artists and makeup items as part of her convoy.

According to Mr Gyamfi, transporting makeup items in a taxpayer-fuelled vehicle is a waste of the country’s resources.

“…there is another person; Samira Bawumia. Do you know her convoy includes a brand new Land Cruiser carrying makeup, and makeup artiste? It follows her everywhere. Who is paying for that? The taxpayer,” he alleged.

However, the Second Lady’s lawyers, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, in a letter dated November 9, 2022, demanded a retraction and apology over what they described as untrue statements.

They demanded Mr Gyamfi retract and render an apology on the programme on which he unrestrainedly peddled the false allegation.

The letter addressed to the Manager of Neat FM said Mr Gyamfi’s comments and the radio host’s failure to reign him in had made Mrs Samira Bawumia appear “insensitive, wasteful and unreasonable” in the mind of right-thinking members of society.

Mr Gyamfi, in response to the letter, retracted his comment and rendered an unqualified apology on the same station.

“I retract my words, and I say the Second Lady’s convoy has no LandCruiser that is for her makeup.”

“There is no V8 that carries makeup kits for the Second Lady, according to her office. It is only fair for me to do this retraction,” he stressed.

“I gravely apologise to the Second Lady of Ghana,” he said during the live radio interaction over the phone.
