Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has been arrested for reckless and inconsiderate driving.
The legislator was reportedly driving in the middle of the road around the Airport area in his vehicle with registration number GB-9776-21 with no regard for pedestrians and other road users.
He was arrested on Thursday, November 3, 2022, after the police impounded his vehicle.
He has been charged to appear in court to be put through the due process of the law.
This is not the first time the MP or driver has been noted for careless driving.
In November 2021, Inspector Daniel Agbavor, a guard assigned to Mr Sosu, was arrested for alleged misconduct.
Inspector Agbavor was said to have driven into a crowd after a protest march engineered by the MP on Monday, October 25, 2021.
The police, in a statement issued and signed by the then Director-General, Public Affairs, ACP Kwesi Ofori, said the action of the officer directly endangered the lives of two senior officers as well as the lives of other civilians.
In Ghana, a person who drives a motor vehicle on the road without due care, attention and reasonable consideration for other road users commit an offence liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding 2000 penalty units or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.
The Madina MP is not the first to be arrested for careless driving.
Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Kofi Buah, Sissala West Mohammed Adams Sukparu, Nhyiaeso MP Dr Stephen Amoah and Tarkwa Nsuaem MP George Mireku Duker have fallen foul of the law over the same issue.
Sosu’s court hurdles
On November 29, 2021, the Kaneshie District Court issued a bench warrant for the Madina MP’s arrest for failing to appear before the court.
On three occasions, the MP failed to appear before the court, where he was accused of unlawfully blocking a road and destroying public property during a protest.
The MP led some constituents to demonstrate against poor roads in the constituency, thus the bench warrant.
During the protest, some protestors allegedly blocked roads, burnt tyres and destroyed some public property.
