A/R: Structures set ablaze as violent clashes at Dagomba Line reignite

There is escalating tension at Dagomba Line in the Ashanti Region as a conflict between groups in the area has resurfaced after some near-violent clashes broke out on Tuesday [9th July 2019].

Two persons who were wielding machetes and threatening to cause mayhem have subsequently been picked up by the police.

There is a reinforcement of police and military officers as structures are being set ablaze.

Some victims of the violence had sustained machete wounds.

Some residents whose houses have been attacked are currently fleeing their homes for the fear of losing their lives.

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that relative calm had returned to the area after seven people were injured in the initial clashes.

Calm returned to the area following a meeting between the Asokore Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, Alidu Seidu, a joint team of military and police officers and the feuding parties.

Background

Tuesday’s incident happened when a private citizen, Imam Abdul Rahman Samba Kaado, who claims to be the owner of land together with some security personnel, attempted to evict those living on the land.

The persons who are predominantly scrapping dealers, however, resisted the move which led to the disturbances.

The residents insisted that they are occupying the land legally.

According to them, previous court cases on the land have been in their favour.

One of their leaders, Ibrahim Yahaya Ngbrana, said the intervention of the Municipal Chief Executive Officer for the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly had reduced the tension in the area.

He said they are willing to resolve the matter amicably with all the parties involved.

“Honourable Alidu Seidu, MCE of Asokore Mampong came here together with the police and military to ensure peace. They sat with the leaders of the two factions on how to resolve the matter. They said we should all provide our land documents to ascertain the truth. They said we should inform the police whenever any issue pops up”.
