Route March in Ghana To Mark 77th UN Day
Ghanaian security personnel marched through the country’s capital Accra as part of the 77th UN anniversary celebrations.
The march sets the tone for the big day and acts as wake up call on the public which is traditionally laid back if not indifferent to events of this nature. On the platform of the United Nations, people are not considered assembly of multinationals but the assembly of one single unit.
The 250-strong security contingent which undertook the march were drawn from the army, the police, immigration, Prison and Fire services. They took off from the State House and after several kilometres of the walking exercise via the ridge circle, Accra Technical University and the John Evans Atta Mills high street overlooking the Gulf of Guinea, they pulled up at the Black Star square near the Christianborg Castle at Osu.
Brass band music and the scenes, appeared to enchant bystanders who then chanted the songs of the security personnel, and though people kept to discipline by not jumping onto the streets with them, there were exchange of friendly gestures . This is one engagement with the effect of drawing out people to observe and have ocular experience, following Instinctive public spontaneity. This way, they informally grasp the United Nations, especially if the march involved expressive messages.
A side attraction to the march was a health walk. Civilian workers whose duties interface the UN one way or the other were however in the ranks of the security services. The lines between the two were blurred as some were clad in UN ‘T’ shirts and motioned apace.
Over the years, the UN has been of great help not only to Ghana but all countries. The UN system operates through councils, specialized agencies, corporations, programmes, training institutions and other forms to maintain peace, protect nature, promote development and, advance civilisations. The organisation has branches in almost all countries helping to shape progress and thwart adversity on mankind and biodiversity in ecosystem.
Ghana is highly commended for her strong attachment to peacekeeping operations. Some senior officers served as force commanders, special military/operational advisors to UN missions and deployment of boots on the ground in both peacekeeping and peace enforcement depending on the rules of engagement in conflict situations.
The route march sets the stage for what looks like one of the most reflective and nudging experiences on the UN when the celebrations hit the climax on October 25. At this point, diplomatic community joins senior government officials of the host country to mark the day.
