National Security did not torture me – Modern Ghana reporter emphasizes
Emmanuel Yeboah Britwum, a reporter with the Ghanaian online news portal Modern Ghana, has revealed that he was not tortured or brutalized when National Security operatives picked him up for questioning together with his editor, Emmanuel Ajarfor Abugri, on June 27.
Emmanuel Britwum’s lawyer also emphatically stated that her client was never subjected to any form of torture as being claimed and reported in the media.
In a press statement signed and issued on Wednesday, solicitor for Emmanuel Britwum, Debora Asabere-Ameyaw Esq. indicated attempts have been made to draw her client into the raging debate over the alleged unlawful arrest and torture and eventually the interrogation of Modern Ghana’s news editor, Emmanuel Ajafor by national security officers.
“For the avoidance of doubt, my client wishes to state categorically that he never witnessed Mr. Ajafor being ‘tortured or brutalised’ nor did he elect anyone to speak on his behalf publicly on the matter in issue”. The statement said.
It further indicated that Emmanuel Britwum, wishes to dissociate himself entirely from allegations of misconduct being leveled in his name against the National Security over the aforementioned issue in the media.
” Mr. Britwum assures the public to corporate fully with the police regarding the ongoing investigations to help ensure the matter gets to its logical conclusion”. The solicitor further stated.
Both journalists, Emmanuel Britwum and Emmanuel Abugri Ajafor were picked up at their east-legon office on June 27 National Security personnel for allegedly hacking into mails and websites of their competitors.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called for independent investigation into the alleged torture and circumstances leading to their arrest.
