The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has moved to resolve the grading system impasse between final-year students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and school authorities by deploying officials to the school to assess the situation.

Level 400 students of the University on Monday, October 10, demonstrated against the school authorities over challenges with their grading system.

About two weeks ago, some of the students protested against the school over what they say was a deliberate attempt by school authorities to withhold their results on the student portal.

The Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Mohammed Salifu stated that it is incumbent on the commission to resolve cases of this sort in the tertiary institutions.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that anytime the systems that the university put in place are not working well, we move in there and hold them to account”

Prof. Salifu noted that his outfit will ensure that the grading system of the school is credible, hence the decision to audit it.

“We will have to get in and do a snap audit to make sure the systems are functioning as they should. Clearly, when you hear students protesting like this, it means there is something wrong. The auditors are supposed to be there this week to begin the work.”

Meanwhile, the school authorities have assured that the concerns of the students are being resolved.

In an interview, the Director of Educational Research and Innovation at the Institution, Professor Avea Nsor urged the students to cooperate with management rather than protest.

“If I were the students, I would just engage the leadership of the university because we are having a series of meetings to know what the problem is and how to deal with it”, he said.

Professor Avea Nsor, said management had met on the problem.

He noted that the process of migrating the student portal to a new platform caused some challenges.

“But it is something we can deal with, and we are dealing with it,” he explained on citi news.

He said solving the problems will take “a few more days or possibly a week or two to be able to deal with.”

There are reports that some of the students have boycotted their end-of-semester exams.
