The Ghana Immigration Service(GIS) has arrested thirty-six persons allegedly involved in network marketing scamming at Ejisu in Ashanti Region.
Out of the 36 arrested, 17 are ladies, including a nursing mother.
The majority of the suspects are nationals from other West African countries who apparently arrived in Ghana under the guise of securing employment with some multinational companies.
Upon arrival, they were recruited into network marketing, luring others to fall victim to the alleged scam.
The Ejisu Municipal Commander of Immigration, Alfred Nii Boye Lartey, confirming the arrests to the media described their activities as a threat to national security.
“When I went there with my men, I noticed they had locked themselves in a room, and they were all making calls; they were holding forms for prospective victims. They register them, and the victims pay via momo account,” he said.
He explained that the suspects had breached immigration laws by engaging in illegal activities and without Ghanaian resident permits.
However, Abdul Azis Nasiru, the leader of the group, denied the allegations claiming their activities and business are legitimate.
“We all have our customers, and we do daily checkups on them while we comb for prospective customers. I don’t know why they have arrested us because our business is registered, and I have documents to prove it,” he complained.
But according to the Commander of Immigration, the supposed documents are not genuine.
Meanwhile, he said education would be intensified on the need for landlords to be wary of persons renting their apartments.
