Densu River Overflow Displaces Over 2,000 Residents
More than a thousand people have been displaced in Weija and its surrounding areas in the Ga South municipality after their homes were flooded as the river Densu overflowed its banks under the weight of torrential rains and spillage of the Weija Dam by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).
Suburbs like Ashalaja, Manhean, and Oboom were flooded.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and Military personnel used canoes to rescue the affected people.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga South, Hon. Joseph Nyarni Stephen revealed that residents had not witnessed such a disaster in the last six years.
Meanwhile, the Ga South municipal NADMO director Christian Afenyo said, they have identified some churches and schools where the victims can take temporal shelter.
Stating that the victims are more than a thousand and the houses destroyed about five hundred which cannot be inhabited at the moment, the officer from NADMO noted that the river which started overflowing its banks on Friday evening, reduced in tempo on Saturday , only to spill flash-waters from Sunday onwards.
He gave the assurance that NADMO is putting in its best to calm the situation. These may take the form of rescue measures and identifying temporal shelters for flood victims. Ten churches have volunteered their space for the humanitarian gesture.
At New Juaben, seven persons were displaced by the rains which also led to closure of some schools.
The operations director for NADMO at New Juaben North, Mr. Daniel Kankam Twumasi has said that, the affected houses are about seventy and the affected people are about seven hundred . The worst-hit was Akwadum, hence the Municipal Chief Executive(MCE)has advised schools not to re-open for at least one week in that area.
