June 3rd victims not yet compensated – NADMO

Four years after the infamous June 3 disaster that shook the nation, the remaining batch of the surviving victims will from today, Monday, start receiving their compensation from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Speaking to Citi News, the Director of Communications at NADMO, George Kojo Ayisi said, a total of GHc1,030,000 will be disbursed to victims and families of the deceased.

He said “for the 15 who lost their lives, their relatives are taking their compensation for them. Then 40 who had injuries but were not given anything the first time, they will be given GHc 10,000 each. Those who lost their lives, their families will be given GHc10,000 each.”

“There are 26 others with minor injuries who will be taking GHc5,000,” Mr. Ayisi added.

These persons were among the hundreds injured after an explosion at a GOIL fuel station at the  Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, which killed more than 150 persons.

In August 2018, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) said it had paid GHc10,000 each to 80 percent of the victims of the June 3 disaster.

Some of the victims of the disaster were vocal about the delay in support for them and even called on the Special Prosecutor to investigate persons tasked to release funds to victims of the accident.

Their request followed a suit filed against the former Metropolitan Chief Executive of the AMA, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije and two others with regards to the disaster.

The 69 plaintiffs, most of whom are victims of the disaster accused the defendants of negligence, leading to the accident and sought GH¢40 million in compensation.
