Galamsey: Sefwi Elubo Chief, brother granted bail

The Chief of Sefwi Elubo and his brother, arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal mining, have been granted bail.

The two appeared in court on Monday, 26th September 2022, with two others who were later picked up by the police for the same crime.

All four, charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, namely mining and mining without a license were granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 each.

They are to reappear on Tuesday, 11th October 2022.

The suspects, Nana Anini Baffour and Kwadwo Affi, were arrested on Friday, 16th September 2022, following a viral video that showed illegal mining activities in some compound houses in the Sefwi Elubo township.

Preliminary investigations showed dug-out pits from the compound leading to the bedroom of the chief’s brother.

“Four other deep dug-out pits have also been uncovered by the police in other houses in the same vicinity.

“Investigation has further revealed that the chief, his brother and six other suspects who are on the run are the main people behind the illegal mining activities,” the police said in an earlier statement.

The two who were later picked up are Mr Maxwell Quansah and Williams Acquah.

Police, in the statement, assured the public that all those involved would be brought to face Justice.
