Accra Zoo Will Re-Open Soon – Minister

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, BeOwusu-Bio, has said that preparations are underway to re-open the Accra Zoo to the public and tourists.

This follows the tragic incident of a lion attacking and killing a man believed to have entered a den to steal a cub.

Mr Owusu-Bio was optimistic that zoo activities would bounce back after he paid a working visit to the centre on Friday, 23rd September 2022, to inspect the progress made on preparations for the re-opening.

Mr. Owusu-Bio also tasked the zoo manager, Mr. Stephen Tamanja, to introduce a  security post around the lion’s den to ward off intruders and an outer parameter fence wall to secure the safety of the visitors.

He also stated the need for modern restroom facilities for visitors and tourists in and around the waiting areas.

He also wants signages on all animal cages.

Authorities are also planning to install street lights around the zoo area and the Achimota Forest to brighten the place up at night to enhance security.

The zoo manager also disclosed that he has been receiving calls from individuals, tourists and institutions on when the zoo was going to re-open to serve tourists and others who visit the place for educational and recreational purposes.
