Furnish us with new locations for limited voter registration – NDC to EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding more clarity from the Electoral Commission (EC) following the commission’s decision to extend its upcoming limited voters’ registration exercise beyond the district offices in certain areas.

The commission is making the compromise to cater for citizens in areas with difficult terrains.

“This is to enable citizens and qualified applicants located in riverine, distant and difficult areas who want to take advantage of the registration process to do so,” Jean Mensa, the EC chairperson explained.

The NDC had wanted the EC to decentralize the exercise up to the electoral area levels instead of just the 260 districts offices.

It cautioned that the earlier plans would lead to the disenfranchising of about a million voters.

The NDC’s Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, told Citi News the EC’s latest announcement in itself is not sufficient enough.

“They have not told us which other areas they are going to include apart from the 260 district registration centres.”

“There is no transparency and the communication is not clear. It is important that as political parties, we know the areas where they are going to deploy their equipment so we can prepare adequately and also send our people to go and monitor.”

“What is the criteria they are using for where they are going to deploy this extra equipment?” he questioned further.

The registration exercise is to take place between Friday, June 7 and Thursday, June 27 2019.
