One person has reportedly passed on following renewed clashes between the Doba and Kandiga ethnic groups in the Upper East Region.
Also, five suspects have been arrested in connection to the said clashes in the Kassena-Nankana Municipal and Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region.
There were sporadic gunshots between the two communities last night, which threatened the safety of road users plying the Bolgatanga-Navrongo road.
The cause of the said clashes is yet to be determined.
The Upper East Regional Police PRO, ASP David Fianko-Okyere, said, the suspects will soon be processed for court.
“When the gunshots were heard, the police and military moved in and contained the situation. Calm has been restored in the area.
“One person was shot dead, and five persons were arrested in connection with the disturbances. Investigations are ongoing, and they will soon be processed for court,” he spoke to Accra-based Citi FM monitored by theghanareport.com.
The police have however assured that calm has been restored in the area and it has since beefed up security to avoid further casualties.
It would be recalled that in April 2020, a communal conflict ensued between the two communities, Doba in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality and Kandiga in the Kassena-Nankana West District, over the ownership of a piece of land at Akonkongo-Abempengo Electoral Area, where a police post and a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound were to be constructed.
The conflict then led to gunshots from the two factions leading to the loss of lives, and the destruction of properties such as houses and farmlands.
It also caused people to seek refuge elsewhere which prompted the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to impose a curfew in the area and form a joint military and police operation team to keep the place calm and maintain law and order.
A statement issued by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, sometime in July 2020, said any person or group of persons from the affected communities caught carrying arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons will be arrested and prosecuted.
Mr. Dery also appealed to the leadership of the affected communities to exercise restraint and resort to non-violent means of settling disputes to ensure peace in the area.
