Basic schools in Ghana are expected to reopen today, 10 May 2022.

The pupils are expected to spend 14 weeks in school, with the next vacation scheduled for 18 August 2022.

There is only one holiday to be enjoyed in this second term. It falls on 4th August 2022 as founder’s day.

Workshops In Second Term

As part of the One Teacher One Laptop initiative, all teachers are expected to undergo some basic ICT training to help them use the various E-learning resources that have been made available on the laptops.

As a result, the Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with KA Technologies (KAT) and Microsoft, is organising physical training for Junior and Senior High School teachers. Some regions will begin their training on 16 May 2022.

Other regions are expected to receive similar training in this term.

Laptop Distribution

According to GES, primary teachers are also expected to receive their long-awaited TM1 laptops in this second term.

Meanwhile, there are still no textbooks three years after introducing the new curriculum.

In a Facebook post, the Executive Director of EduWatch, Kofi Asare, questioned the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and all other stakeholders for the delay in the textbooks.

Mr Asare is not the first person to speak out about this troubling issue, nor is EduWatch the first policy think-tank to do so; several stakeholders, including pre-tertiary teacher unions, teachers, education bloggers, and, most recently, Ghana’s former president, John Mahama, have all added their voices to the plight of public primary schools due to a lack of textbooks, but to no avail.
